MASSETER REDUCTION IN SYDNEY

WHAT IS THE MASSETER MUSCLE?

The masseter muscle stretches through the back part of the cheek, from the cheekbone down to the lower jaw on both sides of the face. The muscle connects the mandible (lower jawbone) to the cheekbone and is known as one of the “muscles of mastication” because it works to raise and close the jaw while chewing.

Masseter muscle hypertrophy is enlargement of the masseter muscle and can contribute to a harsh, square look at the angle of the jaw. The masseter muscle is one of the muscles activated during chewing. It’s located at the “angle of the mandible”, or “angle of the jaw”.

Masseter reduction treatments can be used to ease this muscle and soften the look of the lower face.

WHY DOES THE MASSETER MUSCLE NEED TO BE REDUCED?

The masseter can, in a few people, become enlarged. Typically, people with an enlarged masseter tend to clench or grind their teeth (bruxism) or chew gum excessively. This may result in an asymmetry of the face due to unequal enlargement and increased bulk of the muscle, potentially creating an overly square jawline.

Masseter reduction treatment can potentially:

  • Alleviate teeth grinding
  • Ease jaw tension, pain and clenching
  • Soften a square jawline
  • Refine facial symmetry

ADMINISTRATION AND AFTERCARE

The treatment is administered directly into the masseter muscle, with mild discomfort possible during the treatment. After treatment, avoid strenuous exercise, excessive jaw movement and massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours.

Results may become visible within seven to 10 days, particularly when addressing fine lines. However, when used to treat masseter muscle hypertrophy, the full effect typically develops over three months. The results can last up to six months, after which follow-up sessions are recommended to maintain optimal outcomes.

RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS

Treatments for masseter reduction in Sydney are generally considered safe. However, it is possible for the treatment to cause potential side effects, including temporary bruising, swelling or mild discomfort at the site. In some cases, patients may experience slight headaches or drooling. If any unusual symptoms occur, it is important to contact your healthcare provider promptly.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE CONSULTATION

An initial consultation is required before undergoing treatment. During this consultation, your practitioner will assess your facial structure, discuss your concerns and goals and review your medical history to determine if this treatment is suitable for you. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions about the process and expected outcomes.
